STEM Early Field Experience Pathway
Cal Poly SLO has a STEM Early Field Experience Pathway. You can't choose what you haven't experienced. This pathway lets undergraduates work with kids, then work with kids as a teacher would, and then work in work in actual classrooms with actual students. Here is our pathway:
Learn-by-doing Lab - Undergraduates teach science and engineering to visiting elementary and middle school students
After-school Mentors - Undergraduates teach science and engineering one day a week to… Read more
Assign faculty mentors to students interested in pursuing careers in teaching. Mentors can help mentees with the application process, finding financial aid options, and meet with them throughout their time in the credential program. If possible, mentors are paired with mentees in their specialty area (e.g., multiple subject, single subject, bilingual authorization, special ed, etc.).
Pair future teachers with faculty mentors or TK-12 teachers to do informal mentoring. Recruit mentor teachers who are willing to voluneteer their time if stipends are not available. Mentees can observe the mentor teacher (20 hours for the semester) and provide one-on-one mentoring outside of the classroom. Mentor can allow/attend with mentee to attend meetings, school events, district events, board meetings, union meetings, etc.
Fresno State holds monthly get-togethers for undergraduate students interested in becoming teachers. Each monthly event includes a guest speaker on topics like professional experiences, applying for a teaching job, working in a small neighborhood school, how to become a substitute teacher, and more. Community-building activities are important, such as team building on the Fresno State ropes course, escape room, pot luck luncheon, and others. Important program updates are shared. Request Information Website Link
Add a request information link to the college webpages to capture anyone that visits the website who may want to get information about credential programs. This link should include their name, email, phone number and program of interest and then be tracked for future recruitment events.
RISE - Return, Inspire, and beome a Sweetwater Educator
RISE works with the Sweetwater Union High School District to provide guaranteed employment to credential students from SDSU that graduated as a high school student from that same district and are part of the Compact for Success program. The students are supported and remain engaged throughout the undergraduate experience at SDSU through the Compact Scholars office, and get specialized workshops from the College of Education to assist them in applying to the credential program.
Minor in Education
Offer a minor in Education within your college to attract undergraduate students across all majors. Consider minimizing the amount of units required for the minor to make it more accessible to students with high-unit majors. Offer courses within the minor where the students are able to complete their early field experience requirement. This allows you to track, engage, and introduce the students to your credential and graduate programs.
Educate Campus Faculty and Staff About Profession
Provide trainings to faculty and staff across campus to teach them about the profession and how they can support future teachers in their classroom.
