STEM Early Field Experience Pathway

Cal Poly SLO has a STEM Early Field Experience Pathway. You can't choose what you haven't experienced. This pathway lets undergraduates work with kids, then work with kids as a teacher would, and then work in work in actual classrooms with actual students. Here is our pathway:

Field Trips to Local Schools

​For undergraduates who have attended our Celebration of Teaching Events, we plan to organize field trips to local schools for early structured field experiences.  We would bring them to classrooms with teachers who model high impact practices (e.g. eliciting student thinking) to complete structured observations.  We would end the field trips with a guided reflection on the observation.

Advertisements About Teaching

​Take advantage of public advertising opportunities via the campus marquee, posters, bus or train ticker tape, etc.  Provide URL and QR Codes when possible for interested parties.

Student Space/Center

Provide physical space for future teachers to study, collaborate, network, and get advising from faculty and staff.  Could be an advising center as well so staff would be there to provide support and could manage the space.​

College Social

CSULA invites students, faculty, staff, and community partners to "socials" where the Dean welcomes them.  We try to build morale and then eventually have the students network. We also use this time to recruit students.

Wide Advertising to Recruit Credential Candidates

​CSUDH utilizes a massive public-facing electronic sign situated on the corner of campus in a very high-traffic intersection that invites anyone interested in a career in education to attend our monthly information sessions.  This is the broad funnel that brings many from outside the university's walls into our pipeline.

Campus Tabling

Website Forms for Students Interested in Teaching

​Work with your IT Division to create buttons and forms on your websites that allow you to identify people who are interested in teaching at the undergraduate level (especially for campuses that do not have undergrad programs within their College of Education).
